I am unsure of the identity of these two birds. I originally thought that both birds were Lesser Black-backed Gull. I based this identification on the dark bars on the secondaries and the greater coverts and the apparent lack of a pale window on the inner primaries. Now that I am aware of the similarity of both species in 1st Winter plumage I am no longer so sure, particularly in the case of the top bird with its heavy bill and less marked covert bar. Any comments would be appreciated.
